Nova Scotia Sea Side Sojourn

Besides Abram Lake, the Atlantic Coast is high on the list of my favourite places to visit. My reason for travelling to Halifax, Nova Scotia is primarily to see my aged mother, however over the years I have developed a strong connection with the area. I thoroughly enjoy the rugged beauty of the rocky coastline, stretching from cove to cove. Peggy's Cove, in particular, has become a place I have to visit, as I am truly captivated by the huge slabs of granite rock jutting out into the ocean, with the lighthouse signalling all for miles around.

In September I travelled East once again, and this time decided to add another location to my itinerary. Lawrencetown Beach has now become another favourite, and I anticipate returning there often!

Not only was I enthralled with the beautiful sandy beach, but delighted with the people I met there, too. For two days I had the luxury of walking the beach at low tide, listening to the surf day and night, and basking in the sunlight. By nightfall I travelled to nearby Cole Harbour to enjoy my fill of seafood. It couldn't get much better than that!! What made this adventure even more dear to my heart was being able to spend several hours each day writing in the beautiful journal my friend Denyse gave me. Inspired by the magnificent scenery all around, I was able to capture my impressions not only in photos, but in poetic form as well. Here are some of my initial meanderings:

Lawrencetown Beach

I am mesmerized by the clear blue sea
In which waves reach out to infinity
The power of the water can quickly be felt
As each wave crashes upon the sand
Until back into the ocean it quickly melts.

The sun glistening upon the water
Makes the whole scene seem surreal
While at first the surfers from my view
are completely concealed.

And then the sun catches a glint of their boards
As they swim for the waves - the big ones their rewards!

I walk along the sand at the water's edge
I will walk in the waves the length of the beach I pledge!
For it is not just the exquisite beauty which draws me
But the power, the strength of this ocean I feel.
As I regard this ocean it comes alive
With a movement so energetic, it never subsides!

Conditions seem perfect today it is true
The wind, sky and sea in beautiful shades of blue!
And the rocks must be mentioned
With their rich beauty too
Providing a most fitting backdrop
Glistening in the sun, for me and you!

Sitting on these Grandfathers so polished and smooth
I am amazed at the size of them -they are certainly huge!
Caressed by the tides as they come and go
Heaped up with seaweed which follows the flow.

What is it about all of this which makes us serene?
Is it all that feeds the senses so beautifully?
Is it the vastness of this setting with its power and might
Which quickly gets inside us by day and by night?

As the sound of the surf heightens
And the surfers catch their waves
I realize it is too huge to express
To capture in any way.

For it is Mother Earth at her finest
Putting on this display
For all creatures to witness
By night and by day.

Mother Eath's way of saying
You have this power too
To create with majesty
And make your dreams come true.

Mother Nature, For this incredible scene -
I Thank You!!
